Lash Extensions & Winter Activities in Saskatoon | Your Guide
Can You Enjoy Winter Activities with Lash Extensions in Saskatoon?
If you’re wondering whether lash extensions can survive a Saskatchewan winter—complete with skating, skiing, tobogganing, and everything in between—the answer is a resounding yes! I’ve had clients come back from weekends at Table Mountain, afternoons on the Meewasin skating trail, and Family Day tobogganing at Diefenbaker Park with their lashes looking just as beautiful as when they left my studio.
Here at Étoile Lash Studio, I work with many active women who refuse to choose between gorgeous lashes and their love of winter activities. After 5+ years as a lash technician in Saskatoon, I’ve learned exactly what it takes to create lash sets that hold up to our unique Prairie winter lifestyle.
How Lash Extensions Handle Winter Sports
The good news is that professionally applied lash extensions are surprisingly durable. The adhesive I use is medical-grade and designed to withstand moisture, temperature changes, and physical activity. Here’s how different winter activities affect your lashes:
Skating and Hockey
Whether you’re gliding along the Meewasin Trail, taking laps at the Shaw Centre, or playing shinny at your local outdoor rink, skating is gentle on lash extensions. The main thing to watch for is sweat building up under your helmet if you play hockey. I recommend:
- ✔️ Wiping your brow before sweat drips into your eyes
- ✔️ Patting lashes dry with a clean tissue after skating
- ✔️ Avoiding touching or rubbing your eyes when you come inside to warm up
One of my regular clients plays recreational hockey at the Gordie Howe Sports Complex twice a week. She’s been wearing lash extensions for over two years with no issues—she just books consistent refills every 2.5 weeks.
Skiing and Snowboarding
Hitting the slopes at Table Mountain or planning a trip to the Rockies? Your lash extensions will be just fine. The main considerations are:
Goggles: Choose goggles with a frame that doesn’t press directly against your lashes. Most standard ski goggles work perfectly with classic and light hybrid sets. If you have dramatic volume lashes (think Russian volume or mega volume), look for goggles with foam backing that creates a slight gap.
Cold temperatures: The adhesive itself isn’t affected by cold, but if your lashes get wet from snow and then freeze, they can feel stiff temporarily. They’ll return to normal once you warm up indoors.
Wind: Strong wind can cause lashes to tangle slightly. A quick brush with your spoolie after a day on the mountain keeps everything in place.
A client who skis every weekend during winter told me: “I was so worried my lashes would look terrible after a full day on the slopes. They looked perfect! My friends couldn’t believe it.”
Tobogganing and Outdoor Family Fun
Taking the kids to Diefenbaker Park’s toboggan hill or building snowmen in your Stonebridge backyard? These activities are easy on lash extensions. The only thing to keep in mind is avoiding the temptation to rub your eyes with snowy mittens. Snow melting on your lashes is fine—rubbing is what causes extensions to loosen.
Ice Fishing
For those Saskatchewan winter traditions that involve sitting still in the cold for hours—yes, your lash extensions can handle ice fishing too! The dry, cold air actually works in your favour here. Just make sure your lashes are completely dry before heading out onto the ice.
Essential Winter Care Tips for Active Lash Wearers
If you love winter activities and want your lash extensions to last their full 2-3 weeks between refills, follow these tips I give all my active clients:
Before You Head Out
- Ensure lashes are completely dry before exposure to extreme cold
- Apply a light coat of lash sealant for extra protection (I sell these at the studio)
- Avoid heavy eye creams that morning, as oils can weaken adhesive
During Your Activity
- Don’t rub your eyes if snow gets on your face—gently pat instead
- Wipe sweat away before it drips into your lash line
- Adjust goggles if they feel like they’re pressing on your lashes
After Coming Inside
- Pat lashes dry with a clean tissue or lint-free cloth
- Wait 10 minutes before brushing, letting them return to room temperature
- Brush gently with a clean spoolie to restore their shape
- Clean your lashes that evening with a proper lash cleanser to remove any salt or debris
Weekly Maintenance for Active Lifestyles
If you’re enjoying winter activities regularly, I recommend:
- Cleaning your lashes 3 times per week instead of 2
- Using a lash sealant once or twice weekly for extra bond strength
- Booking refills every 2-2.5 weeks instead of 3 weeks

Best Lash Styles for Active Winter Lifestyles
Not all lash styles are created equal when it comes to durability during physical activity. Here’s what I recommend for my active Saskatoon clients:
For Maximum Durability
Classic lash extensions are your best bet for winter activities. With one extension bonded to each natural lash, they’re lightweight, secure, and less likely to catch on goggles or get tangled in the wind.
For a Bit More Drama
Hybrid sets work beautifully for active clients who want more volume. The mix of classic and volume fans gives you fuller lashes while maintaining good durability. Most of my active clients choose this style.
What I Don’t Recommend
Mega volume or dramatic sets with very long lengths (15mm+) can be trickier for winter activities. The longer and fuller your lashes, the more they can catch on goggles or get tangled when wet. If you love dramatic lashes but also love skiing, we can discuss a compromise—perhaps dramatic in summer and slightly more natural in winter.
Choosing the Right Adhesive
One thing that sets professional lash applications apart is the adhesive. I use a high-retention, flexible adhesive that’s specifically designed to move with your natural lashes. This matters for active lifestyles because:
- It doesn’t become brittle in cold temperatures
- It maintains its bond through temperature fluctuations (going from -30°C outside to heated indoor spaces)
- It’s waterproof once fully cured (24 hours after application)
This is why I always recommend waiting 24-48 hours after your lash appointment before engaging in intense winter activities. The adhesive needs time to fully cure.
Planning Around Your Winter Schedule
If you have a big winter event or trip coming up—whether it’s a ski weekend, a winter wedding, or the kids’ hockey tournament—here’s how to time your lash appointments:
For a Weekend Ski Trip
Book your refill or full set 3-4 days before you leave. This ensures your lashes look full and photo-ready, and gives the adhesive time to cure completely before you’re exposed to cold, wind, and snow.
For Ongoing Winter Activities
If you’re regularly skating, skiing, or playing winter sports, consider booking refills every 2-2.5 weeks instead of the typical 3 weeks. The extra activity means slightly faster natural lash shedding, and more frequent refills keep your set looking consistently full.
During the Coldest Weeks
When Saskatoon hits those brutal -35°C to -40°C stretches, extra care helps. Make sure you’re giving your lashes a few minutes to adjust before going from a warm car to extreme cold, and always ensure they’re dry.
You Don’t Have to Choose
Gone are the days of choosing between beautiful lashes and an active Saskatchewan winter lifestyle. With the right application, proper care, and a lash technician who understands active lifestyles, you can absolutely have both.
Whether you’re planning to spend Family Day weekend on the toboggan hill, training for a recreational hockey league, or just want to look gorgeous while walking your dog through Nutana in January—your lash extensions can come along for the ride.
