Why Curl Selection Matters for Downturned Eyes

The curl of your lash extensions is the most important factor when working with downturned eyes. Standard B or C curls that look beautiful on other eye shapes can actually emphasize the downward angle of your eyes.

The Best Curls for Downturned Eyes

For my Saskatoon clients with downturned eyes, I typically recommend:

CC Curl: A slightly stronger curl than the standard C, perfect for mild downturning. It lifts without looking too dramatic.

D Curl: My go-to for most downturned eyes. This curl opens up the eye beautifully and creates that wide-awake look.

L and L+ Curls: These have a flat base with a dramatic lift—ideal for very pronounced downturned eyes or clients who want maximum lift.

Just last week, a client came in feeling frustrated because her previous lash set (from another studio) made her look even more tired. She’d been given standard C curls all the way across. Once I remapped her lashes with D curls and adjusted the placement, she was thrilled with how awake and lifted her eyes looked.

The “Lifted Cat Eye” Technique

For downturned eyes, I often use what I call a “lifted cat eye” or “doll eye hybrid” mapping:

1. Inner corner: Shorter lashes (8-9mm) with a gentle curl
2. Middle section: Longest lashes (12-14mm) with the strongest curl
3. Outer corner: Medium lashes (10-11mm) that stay lifted—NOT the longest

By placing the longest lashes in the middle rather than the outer corner, we create a lifted, open appearance instead of pulling the eye downward.

What to Avoid

Traditional cat eye styles place the longest lashes at the outer corners. For downturned eyes, this can:

• Emphasize the downward slope
• Make eyes look droopy or tired
• Create an unbalanced appearance

During Saskatchewan winters, when shorter days and cold weather already make us feel tired, the last thing you want is lashes that add to that sleepy look! That’s why I take extra care with eye shape analysis before every appointment.
