Lash Extensions for Hooded Eyes in Saskatoon | Expert Guide
Can You Get Lash Extensions with Hooded Eyes?
If you have hooded eyes and you’ve been wondering whether lash extensions will actually show up—or worse, look droopy—you’re not alone. This is one of the most common questions I get from clients here at my Saskatoon lash studio.
The short answer? Yes, lash extensions look absolutely stunning on hooded eyes. But here’s the thing: they require a slightly different approach than other eye shapes. After applying thousands of lash sets over my 5+ years as a certified lash technician, I’ve developed specific techniques that help hooded eyes look more open, lifted, and gorgeous.
Let me walk you through everything you need to know about getting lash extensions in Saskatoon when you have hooded eyes.
What Are Hooded Eyes, Exactly?
Hooded eyes have a fold of skin that droops over the crease, making the eyelid appear smaller or even hidden. When you look straight ahead, the crease might be partially or fully covered by this skin fold.
Common characteristics of hooded eyes include:
- ✔️ Limited visible lid space when eyes are open
- ✔️ The crease disappears or is hidden under the brow bone
- ✔️ Eyeshadow tends to “disappear” into the fold
- ✔️ Mascara may transfer to the upper lid
Here’s what I tell my clients: hooded eyes are incredibly beautiful and actually quite common. Many celebrities have hooded eyes—think Blake Lively, Jennifer Lawrence, and Taylor Swift. The key is working with your eye shape, not against it.
The Best Lash Curl for Hooded Eyes
The curl type is the most important factor when it comes to lash extensions for hooded eyes. Here in my Stonebridge home studio, I keep a full range of curls specifically because different eye shapes need different solutions.
Curls I Recommend for Hooded Eyes:
D Curl – The most popular choice for hooded eyes. D curl has a noticeable upward curve that helps lashes stay visible above the hood. It creates that wide-awake, eye-opening effect that many clients love.
L Curl – A game-changer for heavily hooded eyes. L curl lashes have a straight base that lifts dramatically at the tip—almost like they’re doing a little kick. This design means the lashes extend outward and upward, avoiding that droopy look.
L+ Curl – Even more dramatic than L curl, this is perfect for clients who want maximum lift. I often use L+ curl in the center of the eye to really open things up.
Curls to Avoid:
J Curl and B Curl – These gentler curls tend to blend right into the hood, making them nearly invisible. While they work beautifully for almond or round eyes, they’re usually not the best choice for hooded lids.
Lash Length and Placement Strategy
Length matters just as much as curl when you have hooded eyes. One of the biggest mistakes I see is using lengths that are too long in the center—this can actually weigh down your lashes and make your eyes look smaller.
My Approach for Hooded Eyes:
- Inner corner: 8-9mm with a lifting curl
- Center: 10-11mm (not too long!)
- Outer corner: 11-12mm for a subtle cat-eye lift
I also use a technique called “lifting placement.” Instead of applying lashes straight up, I angle them slightly outward and upward. This helps counteract the weight of the hood and keeps your lashes looking perky all day long.
During your consultation at Étoile Lash Studio, I’ll map out exactly what lengths and placements will work best for your specific eye shape. Every client is different, and cookie-cutter approaches just don’t work for hooded eyes.
Classic, Hybrid, or Volume for Hooded Eyes?
All three lash styles can look gorgeous on hooded eyes—it really comes down to your personal preference and lifestyle.
Classic Lashes
Classic lash extensions apply one extension to each natural lash. They’re lightweight and natural-looking, which can be great for hooded eyes since there’s no added weight to pull lashes down. However, if you have sparse natural lashes, classic might not provide enough impact to show above your hood.
Hybrid Lashes
Hybrid lashes mix classic and volume techniques. This is often my go-to recommendation for hooded eyes because it provides more fullness without being too heavy. The extra dimension helps your lashes stand out.
Volume Lashes
Volume lash extensions use lightweight fans of 2-6 lashes per natural lash. Despite what you might think, volume can actually work wonderfully for hooded eyes—the fans are featherlight and the added fullness helps lashes show up beautifully. Just be sure to work with an experienced technician who uses proper lightweight fans.
Real Client Stories: Hooded Eye Transformations
Just last month, a client came to me feeling frustrated. She’d been to two other lash studios in Saskatoon before and both times, her extensions looked “flat” and disappeared into her lids within days. She was ready to give up on lash extensions entirely.
After assessing her eye shape, I used L+ curl lashes with strategic length placement—shorter in the center, gradually longer toward the outer corners. The result? She literally teared up when she looked in the mirror. Her eyes looked bigger and more awake than ever before.
Another client, a nurse working at RUH, has severely hooded eyes and needs her lashes to look good for 12+ hour shifts. We found that a wispy hybrid set using D curl keeps her looking refreshed throughout those long Saskatchewan winter nights.
Tips for Long-Lasting Lash Extensions on Hooded Eyes
Because hooded eyes have more skin contact with the lash line, there are a few extra aftercare considerations:
-
Be extra careful with oils. The fold of your lid can trap oils and serums more easily. Avoid any oil-based products near your eyes—check out our lash aftercare guide for product recommendations.
-
Brush your lashes gently each morning. Sleeping can cause lashes to shift, especially with hooded eyes. A quick brush straightens them out.
-
Book refills every 2-3 weeks. Hooded eyes tend to rub against lashes more, so you might notice slightly faster natural shedding. Regular lash refills keep your set looking full.
-
Consider a lash-friendly sleep mask. If you’re a side sleeper, a contoured sleep mask can prevent your hood from pressing against your extensions.
Finding the Right Lash Tech for Hooded Eyes
Not every lash technician has experience with hooded eyes, and technique really matters. When looking for a lash artist in Saskatoon, ask these questions:
- What curl types do you carry? (Look for D, L, and L+ options)
- Have you worked with hooded eyes before?
- Do you offer custom lash mapping?
At Étoile Lash Studio, I specialize in creating custom lash maps for every client based on their unique eye shape. Your hooded eyes aren’t a problem to fix—they’re simply a beautiful eye shape that deserves a customized approach.
