Lash Extensions for Monolid Eyes: A Saskatoon Lash Tech’s Guide

If you have monolid eyes, you’ve probably been told that lash extensions “won’t show” or that you need to stick with strip lashes. I hear this from clients all the time here at Étoile Lash Studio in Saskatoon, and I’m always happy to prove it wrong. The truth is that lash extensions look absolutely gorgeous on monolid eyes — you just need the right curl, length, and mapping technique.

I’m Julia Tran, and as a certified lash technician with over five years of experience, I’ve worked with dozens of monolid clients across Saskatoon. Many of them now come in for regular refills because they love how their lashes turned out. Let me share everything I’ve learned about making monolid lash extensions look their best.

What Are Monolid Eyes?

Monolid eyes — also called single eyelids — have no visible crease when the eyes are open. The skin from the brow extends smoothly to the lash line without a defined fold. This is common in people of East Asian heritage, though monolids appear across many ethnicities.

The main challenge with monolid lash extensions isn’t the eye shape itself. It’s that the lid sits closer to or directly on the lash line, which can push lashes downward or hide curls that would be perfectly visible on other eye shapes. That’s why curl selection is everything when I’m working with monolid clients.

Why Curl Selection Matters More for Monolids

Here’s something most people don’t realize: a C curl that looks dramatic on almond eyes can completely disappear behind a monolid. The lid weight pushes the lash down, and suddenly your beautiful extensions are invisible from the front.

This is the number one reason monolid clients sometimes feel disappointed after getting lashes elsewhere. It’s not that extensions don’t work — it’s that the wrong curl was used.

The Best Curls for Monolid Eyes

  • D Curl — My most recommended curl for monolids. It has a strong upward curve that lifts lashes above the lid line. Most of my monolid clients in Saskatoon end up with D curl and love the result.

  • L Curl — This curl has a flat base with a sharp upward lift. It’s ideal for monolids because the flat base sits flush against the natural lash while the tip curves dramatically upward. I use L curl especially when clients have very straight natural lashes.

  • L+ Curl — A slightly softer version of L curl with more gradual lift. Great for clients who want the lifting effect of L curl but with a more natural finish.

  • CC Curl — Works for some monolids, especially those with a slight crease that appears when smiling. I test CC curl during consultations to see if it clears the lid.

Curls to Avoid

  • J Curl — Too subtle for monolids. The lashes will be completely hidden behind the lid.
  • B Curl — Same issue. Not enough lift to clear the lid line.
  • C Curl — Can work on some partial monolids, but it’s risky. I usually steer monolid clients toward D or L curl for guaranteed visibility.

Best Lash Styles for Monolid Eyes

Open Eye / Round Eye Mapping

This is my go-to recommendation for monolid clients who want their eyes to appear larger and more open. I place the longest lashes at the centre of the eye, which creates a round, wide-awake effect.

I worked with a client from Stonebridge last month who’d never tried extensions before. She was nervous they wouldn’t show up on her monolids. We went with a hybrid set using D curl and open eye mapping — the transformation was incredible. Her eyes looked visibly bigger and brighter, and she didn’t need any eye makeup to make them pop.

Cat Eye Mapping

Cat eye works on monolids, but I approach it differently than I would on round eyes or almond eyes. I keep the outer extensions slightly shorter than I normally would, because too much length at the outer corner can weigh the lid down and create a droopy effect instead of a lifted one.

The key is using a strong curl (D or L) at the outer corner and keeping maximum lengths around 12-13mm rather than going to 14-15mm.

Natural Enhancement

Not every monolid client wants dramatic lashes. For a subtle, everyday look, I use D curl at shorter lengths (9-11mm) to add definition without being obvious. This is popular with my clients who work professional jobs or prefer a polished, understated look.

How I Custom Map Lashes for Monolid Eyes

Every monolid is different. Some have a slight fold that appears when looking down. Others are completely flat. Some have more lid space on one side than the other. My custom lash mapping process accounts for all of this.

Here’s what I do during your consultation at Étoile Lash Studio:

  1. Lid assessment — I check how much the lid covers the lash line with your eyes open, looking down, and looking to the side.

  2. Curl testing — I hold sample lashes against your natural lashes to see which curl clears the lid. This is the most important step for monolids.

  3. Length planning — I map out 5 sections across your lash line with specific lengths for each. Monolids typically need slightly longer extensions than other eye shapes to compensate for lid coverage — usually 1-2mm longer than I’d use on the same lash for an almond or round eye.

  4. Symmetry check — Many people have slightly asymmetric lids. I adjust the mapping for each eye individually so both sides look balanced from the front.

A Real Client Story

One of my favourite monolid transformations happened a few months ago. A University of Saskatchewan student came in after a frustrating experience at another studio where her C curl classics had been completely invisible. She was ready to give up on extensions entirely.

I suggested we try L curl volume fans with an open eye mapping. The flat base of the L curl bonded perfectly to her straight natural lashes, and the fans added the fullness she wanted. When she opened her eyes and looked in the mirror, she literally gasped. “I can actually see my lashes!” she said.

She’s now one of my regular clients, coming in every three weeks for fills. Her lash retention has been excellent because the L curl base provides such a strong bond with straight natural lashes.

Classic, Hybrid, or Volume for Monolids?

Classic

One extension per natural lash. Classic can work on monolids if you use D or L curl, but the single lash may still get partially hidden. I recommend classic for monolid clients who have dense natural lashes and want a subtle enhancement.

Hybrid

A mix of classic and volume fans. This is my most recommended option for monolids because the volume fans add enough fullness to stay visible above the lid, while the classic lashes add definition. Check our pricing page for hybrid rates.

Volume

Multiple lightweight fans per natural lash. Volume lash extensions are fantastic for monolids because the fluffy fans are impossible to hide — even behind a full lid. If you want a glamorous, full look, volume with D curl is your best bet.

Aftercare Tips Specific to Monolids

Standard lash aftercare applies, but here are a few extra tips for monolid clients:

  • Brush lashes upward daily — The lid can push lashes sideways overnight. A quick brush with a clean spoolie each morning keeps them pointing up and visible.

  • Avoid sleeping face-down — This is important for everyone, but especially monolids. Pressure from a pillow can flatten the curl over time. See our tips on sleeping with lash extensions.

  • Consider a lash sealant — During Saskatoon’s dry Saskatchewan winters, a sealant helps maintain the curl and bonding, which is especially important when the curl needs to fight gravity and lid weight.

  • Book refills on time — As extensions grow out, shorter lashes may dip below the lid line. Consistent 2-3 week refill appointments keep everything looking full and lifted.
